Product Description
I use this activity during the reading of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Students do a series of in classroom activities in which one team is at an obvious disadvantage. After the activities, students complete a silent reflection on the "equal tasks" and how opportunity is tied to advantage.

The lesson is designed to help students reflect on equality and fairness in an effort to develop compassion and understanding-- to see life from the perspective of someone else. It could be followed by a sociological study of a disadvantaged group or a personal writing activity.
