More and more Europeans are making the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean with visions and aspirations for a better life. Many already had a destination in mind, but with 13 very different colonies to choose from, this may have been a difficult decision for some. So in this experiential exercise, your group will transform into a marketing team representing one of the 13 British colonies in North America! Your objective is to launch an advertising campaign to encourage people to move there! Below are the three tasks your team will need to complete. Enjoy!
Task 1: Read and Research!
Start off by having your Colonial Regions Map and Chart handy while reading the History Alive section about your colony. I definitely recommend creating a similar chart for your colony too, or better yet a concept chart! If a computer is available, do a little research, and check out some of the helpful links I've posted. It's so important that you are as informed as possible about your colony, because the more information you collect, the easier it will be to come up with great marketing ideas!
Task 2: Create a Colonial Billboard!
Think about some of the billboards you have seen while driving on the freeway? What do they have in common? One thing is for sure, they grab your attention! Each team member must create their own colorful colonial billboard first, then each one will be glued onto the team billboard. While I recommend borrowing ideas from existing billboards or recognizable symbols and modifying them, feel free to come up with your own original ideas. Another option is to do this in the form of a full page newspaper ad. Take a look at some of my newspapers to see what I mean. You are responsible for incorporating all 5 of the Requirements listed below, other than that, you have complete creative control!
1. The name of the colony (spelled correctly)
2. Geography/Climate (weather, landforms, bodies of water, type of soil)
3. Types of Jobs (typical jobs, what drives the economy)
4. Interesting Facts/People (at least three total)
5. Catchy Slogan (I recommend changing the words of an existing one)
Task 3: Infomercial Break!
Your marketing team must plan, prepare, and present a 30-60 second television or radio infomercial to advertise their colony. Each team must mention the five requirements from the billboard, and every member must have a part. Other than that, you have complete creative control over over everything! I recommend making changes to an existing commercial, but feel free to come up with something totally original! We'll be filming these and posting them on Edmodo so we can use them as resources to study with! Have some fun with this, and make us remember you!
