Advertising's Super Day: Advertising Techniques and Informational Essay. Analyzing the advertising techniques in Super Bowl commercials! Let your students have fun researching past and present Super Bowl commercials to analyze them for common advertising techniques (e.g. bandwagon, snob appeal, urgency, humor, etc.) Packet also includes an original essay with short answer prompts for responding to text. Prompts also require students to use context clues to define the highlighted vocabulary words in the essay.

Packet Includes:

*An original informational essay, “Advertising’s ‘Super’ Day” describing the advantage of advertising on Super Bowl Sunday.
*Responding to Text page with short answer prompts requiring students to respond critically to the text.
*Advertising Techniques page summarizing common advertising techniques and requiring students to apply them to sample advertising pitches.
*Using Advertising Techniques activity requiring students to employ one or more advertising techniques in writing a storyboard and summary for an original commercial for a product of their choice, real or imagined.
*Recognizing Advertising Techniques activity, in which students research present/past Super Bowl commercials on the Internet then summarize each commercial and analyze the advertising technique(s) used in each.

Lesson Pacing:

Lesson could be used over a period of approximately four days, depending on the level of your students and the length of your class period each day.
A sample pacing:
Day 1: Set purpose for reading, establish background, review vocabulary, do a silent reading of the essay and answer passage questions.
Day 2: Review vocabulary, do a close read of the essay as a group. Assign the Responding to Text as homework/independent work.
Day 3: Mini-lesson on advertising techniques. Students complete the Advertising Techniques page and design their own commercial as homework, using the Using Advertising Techniques activity.
Day 4: Students research present/past Super Bowl commercials (individually or in small groups) and complete the Recognizing Advertising Techniques activity.
