Encourage a GROWTH MINDSET by exploring transferable skills that students can apply in class, at home, in relationships, and in an ever-changing world.

2020 has reminded us that CHANGE IS HARD.

2021 will continue to be unpredictable

    • Look at how the Coronavirus continues to change the world.
    • You can't Google everything and even the answers you find have to be viewed with a critical lens!
    • Sometimes, bad things happen to good people.

It doesn't matter what you teach:

    • homeroom / advisory
    • life skills
    • guidance / careers class
    • English Language Arts
    • Any subject based specialty class

We need to encourage a growth mindset in our students. We need to embed 21st Century Skills / Global Competencies into our classroom.

This product is NOT EASY but worth it.

    • Teaching life skills is NOT EASY but worth it.
    • Likewise, this product requires some PREP WORK on your part. But, it's worth it.
    • I've done 95% of the prep work for you. But you still need to do the last 5% to adapt this product to your changing classroom environment.

▶️ This product contains multiple Google Drive folders.

⛔ Please look at this READ ME FIRST / PREVIEW FILE pdf before you buy!

    • This READ ME FIRST file explains what you get (with screenshots) and how this product is organized.
    • If you have any questions before or after you purchase, please email me: support@educircles.org
    • If you're looking for the "easy button" here are my EASY products.

We know that teaching is more than just delivering the curriculum, but the reality is that we're under pressure to get marks and do so much in our classrooms.

This group challenge can be used at any time.

    • Use it at the START of the school year to set the tone of learning in your class.
    • The END of the school year is also a great time to explore this challenge task. Use this lesson package once you're through the pressure to get report cards and you need material to get you through the last days.
    • Use it any time to reboot your classroom community.

(If you're not sure what 21st Century Skills / Competencies are or what the 6Cs of Education are, check out this post.)

✅ The NO PREP slideshow lesson teaches the concepts.

✅ You can EDIT THE FILES to fit your classroom needs.

The slideshow lesson is comprehensive and teaches the concepts:

    • DISTANCE LEARNING, REMOTE LEARNING, BLENDED LEARNING or
      1:1 LEARNING in Google Classroom
    • IN PERSON LEARNING in your physical classroom

OPTION 1:  DISTANCE LEARNING / REMOTE LEARNING / GOOGLE CLASSROOM

Create the following assignments in your Google Classroom. (One for each lesson)

SECTION A: What are the 6 Cs? Show, don’t tell note taking

    Assignment #1: Lesson A1

    • File 3a Lesson A1 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5a - Character Google Slides (Make a copy for each student)

    Assignment #2: Lesson A2

    • File 3a Lesson A2 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5a - Citizenship Google Slides (Make a copy for each student)

    Assignment #3: Lesson A3

    • File 3a Lesson A3 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5a - Collaboration Google Slides (Make a copy for each student)

    Assignment #4: Lesson A4

    • File 3a Lesson A4 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5a - Communication Google Slides (Make a copy for each student)

    Assignment #5: Lesson A5

    • File 3a Lesson A5 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5a - Creativity Google Slides (Make a copy for each student)

    Assignment #6: Lesson A6

    • File 3a Lesson A6 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5a - Critical Thinking Google Slides (Make a copy for each student)

SECTION B: Look fors / key ideas synthesis (Co-creating rubrics)

Students work independently, then in groups, and finally as a class to synthesize information about each 21st Century Competency / C. If you are doing this in a completely remote learning scenario, here are some suggestions:

    Independent Work

    • File 5d - Look Fors (independent work) - Character (Make a copy for each student)
    • Students use their Show, don’t tell notes from earlier about Character
    • Students identify the 4 key criteria / look fors. (What does a person look like if they’re demonstrating Character.)

    Group Collaboration

    • File 5e - Look Fors (group work) - Character  (Student can view file)
    • Put students into virtual learning groups. One person per group makes a copy of this file and shares editing access to the other group members.
    • Students copy their notes from the previous File 5d into this group document (File 5e) - instructions on how to do this is included in the slides.
    • Students collaborate and synthesize everyone’s ideas into 4 key ideas / criteria
    • The student who copied the file needs to submit this to the teacher.

    Class Consolidation

    • File 5f - Look Fors (class consolidation) - Character  (Student can view file)
    • It is suggested that the teacher shares this file in Google Classroom as view only and does the consolidation as a live online instruction virtual meeting (synchronous learning)
    • One person from each group will have submitted their group work (synthesis) slideshow (File 5e
    • Copy the 4 key ideas / criteria slide from each group (File 5e) into the class document (File 5f)
    • Copy each group’s sticky notes onto the first slide and move to the side. (Instructions on how to do this is included in the file. We also do this in the Group Collaboration so students will have seen this skill before.)
    • Teacher host a virtual class meeting and does some SHARED THINKING:
    • ---The teacher types and moves objects in the file during a virtual lesson to create a class set of common look-fors based on discussion with students.
    • ---Students may not chat (or type in the chat window) so this may turn into a THINK ALOUD consolidation where the teacher synthesizes and creates a learning skills rubric.

FYI: File 5c - Character contains all of the slides for independent work, group collaboration, and class consolidation (for each C) in case you wanted to have one file with all of the slides

    Assignment #7: Lesson B1

    • File 3b Lesson B1 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5c - Look Fors (independent work) - Character (Make a copy for each student)
    • File 5d - Look Fors (group work) - Character  (Student can view file)
    • File 5e - Look Fors (class consolidation) - Character  (Student can view file)

    Assignment #8: Lesson B2

    • File 3b Lesson B2-6 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5c - Look Fors (independent work) - Citizenship (Make a copy for each student)
    • File 5d - Look Fors (group work) - Citizenship (Student can view file)
    • File 5e - Look Fors (class consolidation) - Citizenship (Student can view file)

    Assignment #9: Lesson B3

    • File 3b Lesson B2-6 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5c - Look Fors (independent work) - Collaboration (Make a copy for each student)
    • File 5d - Look Fors (group work) - Collaboration (Student can view file)
    • File 5e - Look Fors (class consolidation) - Collaboration (Student can view file)

    Assignment #10: Lesson B4

    • File 3b Lesson B2-6 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5c - Look Fors (independent work) - Communication (Make a copy for each student)
    • File 5d - Look Fors (group work) - Communication (Student can view file)
    • File 5e - Look Fors (class consolidation) - Communication (Student can view file)

    Assignment #11: Lesson B5

    • File 3b Lesson B2-6 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5c - Look Fors (independent work) - Creativity (Make a copy for each student)
    • File 5d - Look Fors (group work) - Creativity (Student can view file)

    • File 5e - Look Fors (class consolidation) - Critical Thinking (Student can view file)

    SECTION C: Compare and Contrast

Note: If you are in a completely online remote learning environment, it’s probably best to do the previous Section B as the online collaboration opportunity and use this Section C for independent thinking.

    Assignment #13: Lesson C1 - independent thinking

    • File 3c Lesson C1 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • File 5h (Make a copy for each student
    • ---Note: You need to decide whether you want to give students a venn diagram with 2 circles, 3 circles, or 6 circles.
    • File 5i (Make a copy for each student)
    • ---Note: There are 3 different options for the student self-assessment depending on how in-depth you want student reflection to be.

Add to assignment #13 after you teach Lesson C2 - small group collaboration

    • File 3c Lesson C2 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • Students should continue working in File 5h and File 5i from lesson C1

Add to assignment #13 after you teach Lesson C3 - whole class consolidation

    • File 3c Lesson C3 slideshow  (Student can view file)
    • Students should continue working in File 5h and File 5i from lesson C1

    SECTION D: Optional Assessment

    Assignment #14: Lesson D1

    • OPTIONAL: Choose an assessment task (Make a copy for each student)
    • ---File 6a, page 1
    • ---File 6b, page 1
    • ---File 6c

    OPTION 2: IN PERSON Learning

    • Teach using the Google Slideshow (FILE #3) - all of the slides are in this file
    • Lesson Plan (File 2b) identifies which slides and handouts you need for each lesson.

Here are over 2 weeks of lessons (311 pages and slides) to do with your class

    • to learn (or consolidate knowledge) about the 6Cs,
    • to co-create a rubric to assess each of the 6 Cs,
    • to compare and contrast the 6 Cs… while using the 6 Cs
    • to assess student ability to demonstrate 21st Century Skills / Competencies.

    You get:

    • a Google Slideshow explaining all of the 6 Cs and teaching your students strategies and the process to co-create a rubric.
    • a one-page explanation handout for each of the 6 Cs (Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking)
    • more handouts to help students brainstorm and identify key aspects for each C.
    • a small group/whole class collaboration task to create new knowledge and to evaluate what are the key success criteria for each of the 6 Cs.
    • a small group / whole class collaboration task for students to demonstrate their ability to use the 6 Cs while trying to analyze the 6 Cs (compare and contrast)
    • an optional summative performance task or written response assessment.

Answer Key not provided as student answers will vary based on class discussions. The point of the Challenge Task is to have classes collaborate and generate new ideas based on their evolving understanding of 21st Century Skills / Competencies.

Each Chapter package focuses on a different “C” and contains different lessons, slides, videos, and handouts. Although we use the same structure in each chapter (activity, video, vocabulary building), there is no overlap of content between packages.

Lessons can be purchased individually, or you can SAVE MONEY and purchase the entire unit as a BUNDLE.

PSST, do you know the one magic phrase that teachers should tell their students? It's not what you think. Hint: It helps build a growth mindset...
