Is your school starting an Advisory program or class? Or are you looking for ways to improve an existing program? This tool kit is for you. With lessons, activities, student handouts, and ideas for topics to incorporate, you will have all you need to get your program/class off the ground.
Advisory programs in secondary schools are part of the reform movement in education. The purpose of an Advisory program, at its heart, is to give students a stronger connection to school. To create a space and an adult that the student can go to for assistance. As the teacher in an Advisory class, it is our job to mentor our students to help them reach their full potential. It is our job to build a community in the classroom where students have a sense of belonging.
This tool kit has the following sections, each full of suggestions, activity explanations, and student handouts.
1) Forms and Communication
2) Building Community
3) Organization and Time Management
4) Study Skills and Habits
5) Goal Setting and Reflection
6) Other Ideas
Building a successful Advisory program takes time, and lots of trial and error. Good luck to you on your journey! Please email me if you have suggestions, or would like any of the pages altered for your use: firstname.lastname@example.org
