After noticing that the Grade 11 Module 1 focused on aesthetic impact, I designed a short activity to introduce this concept. Both "My Last Duchess" and Hamlet open with questions about aesthetic impact, so I thought it would be best to use art for a pre-unit activity.
Before class, I go to the website listed on the handout and choose a painting to work with. I make copies of it for the class and put it on the big screen for students. Groups follow the directions, while referring to their guided analysis handout and the artwork copy. Sometimes, I've had to walk them through this version. Then, they receive a second copy of a piece of art. Again, I put it on the big screen and they take on their individual roles in groups. T
I repeated this activity before starting the Hamlet unit. This time, students visited the website on laptops and selected their own piece of artwork to analyze.
These activities worked well. I bridged this activity to literature using Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and they saw the beauty of the poem .... especially when they remembered that it was in The Outsiders.
I use this for my emergency plan for a substitute in case I have to be out. They kids know exactly what to do.
