If you are looking for a way to incorporate ELA, culture, and diversity into your art curriculum, look no further. This middle school unit is a great way to celebrate Black History Month, or to include more variety in your artist profiles.
This ZIP file includes both Word and PDF formats of the biography unit. Included is the project in G.R.A.S.P.S. performance assessment prompts (goal, role, audience, situation, product, and specifications). Within the G.R.A.S.P.S. assessment are student choices for artist biography projects, including: Create a large-scale visual timeline of the artist’s life; Create a comic book or graphic novel of the artist’s life; Create a brochure about the artist’s life and contributions to the art world; Create a “visual dictionary” using vocabulary involving the artist.
Also included is a worksheet for students to use to cite sources and gather biography information; a list of 60 suggested artists; and a grading rubric for the final project. Altogether, a four-page document to guide the project.
*UPDATED 2/8/16 to include a PROJECT GUIDE that provides an overview of expectations for each project option.
