I created this assignment out of frustration that aside from the legendary Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, many other black abolitionists are being forgotten to history. In this activity, students use the internet to research 12 such lesser-known men and women. I have provided a brief bio of each person for the teacher, as well as one good website for each person, if you would like to provide students with a head start. Please note that I do this after teaching about Tubman and Douglass, as well as William Still and Sojourner Truth, so they are not included in the students' handouts, but can easily be added in. I included bios for Still and Truth for the teacher, but I urge you to examine them more in depth (and consider using my activities for them!). I suggest doing this as a group activity or jigsaw.
