This PowerPoint Presentation is used in conjunction with my teaching of Hurston's THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD. The PowerPoint outlines the elements of the African-American Dialect and its similarities to the Southern Dialects.
It specifically mentions pronunciations, grammar and diction, all with examples. I use this to introduce the concept of dialect as it is written in the book and discuss how the dialect does have a system of "rules" that governs it.
Also included are word choices and quotes from the text for examples and practice. A great pre-reading activity to help students in their experience of reading dialect.
