The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow Webquest

Students will gain knowledge about Jim Crow laws and discrimination in the late 1800s and early 1900s by completing an internet-based worksheet. The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow Webquest uses a great website from PBS. The website allows students learn about Jim Crow laws, important African Americans, and violence directed at African Americans in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Please check out the website at:
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/jimcrow/index.html

The webquest contains 30 questions and is a great way to introduce or review key facts and events related to Reconstruction, Post Reconstruction, and the early Civil Rights Movement. Students will be able to pick and choose different key people, events, and laws to learn about in the Jim Crow time period. The webquest can be used as one large assignment or can be broken up into three different parts. I usually use this webquest as an introduction activity for my students and it takes most students at least two class periods to complete the webquest. The webquest leads to great classroom discussions about law, justice, and crime. Feel free to modify this activity if needed to fit the needs of your students.

I would like to thank the Gretchen Ebright for the wonderful clip art!
