Learn the musical traits of African American Spirituals and their origins in slavery in the United States; discover their purposes and secret messages;listen to and analyze examples; compare and contrast different interpretations/versions.
I used this lesson with a unit on American Music History with a 7th grade general music class, but it could also be used as a supplemental US History lesson.
This is a one-time lesson that includes a powerpoint with interactive slides, song lyrics, embedded audio, embedded videio, and links to other performances. It also includes a note-taking sheet and a listening analysis sheet, as well as external resources from PBS that go along well with the lesson.
