Since the 2018 Theme of Black History Month by the ASALH is "African Americans in War" I created a webquest using two sites that have readings and videos on African Americans in the War of 1812.
The first page of the webquest is based on the PBS page and excerpt from their War of 1812 documentary. There is a short video clip at the bottom of the page that students need to use to answer the last questions. - http://www.pbs.org/wned/war-of-1812/essays/black-soldier-and-sailors-war/
The second and third pages are based on the on the National Park Series of essays: Fighting for Freedom: African Americans and the War of 1812. My student actually jigsaw this series of essays and each person in the group takes one to find the answers and then they share out. https://www.nps.gov/articles/series.htm?id=FC704658-FFDB-BE94-5AA2B317D11D7958
All of the questions are based on how and why African Americans served in this "second war for American Independence" and how their experiences did not lead to the hoped for freedom and equality for African Americans in the United States in the 1800s. You could also print out these texts and use these sheets as a reading assessment. The answer key is provided.
Happy Black History Month!
