Why teach African Political Geography?
In a time when the U.S. President refers to “Nambia” and makes comments about “s***hole countries,” it’s no wonder that many Americans remain ignorant about one of the largest landmasses on Earth. Treating Africa as one large country rather 54 distinct states reduces the diverse ethnic identities and histories of over 1.2 billion people to just one factor: location. This oversimplified view often results in a problematic dismissal of African politics, international relations, and individual lives. Quelling this ignorance and sparking genuine care and interest in this powerful continent starts with simply demystifying the contents of this great land. What countries exist here? Where are their capitals? Once these basic facts have been established can we begin to understand Africa’s role in both the history and future of humankind.
