With this project, students will bring “Words As Sweet As Honey from Sankhambi” (from the book "Favorite African Folktales" edited by Nelson Mandela) to life. They will engage in a close reading analysis then apply their comprehension to the creation of a piece of art that represents their knowledge. In completing the close reading, students will develop essential literary skills, such as analyzing character and character motivation. In creating the art, students will learn and apply essential art concepts., such as types of lines. By blending literary and artistic skills, students will have the opportunity to complete an engaging project that helps them understand all learning is connected and fun!

The handouts provide scaffolding for students to help them develop their ELA and art abilities. Each handout – one for ELA and one for Art - addresses the specific focus skill in that subject. They provide the opportunity for practice while preparing students to complete the larger project.
The rubric offers a framework to measure students’ success on the final project. They provide means to assess students with descriptors that distinguish for levels of demonstrated performance.
