This product includes 2 types of writing tasks to use when teaching about Africa in world geography classes, when reading African literature in English Language Arts classes, during Black History Month, or any time you are teaching about West Africa or African Studies in Social Studies classes. All the writing prompts are based on photographs of 12 artifacts that I bought when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone.

For the first task, students look at photos of all 12 artifacts and write a description of one of them. This writing task is a great activator for starting a unit about Africa and is how I used the actual artifacts.

The second writing task consists of responding to writing prompts about the individual artifacts. There are 27 prompts total and 2-3 writing prompts for each artifact. One or two prompts are for students at a higher reading and writing level and they ask students to write a persuasive, descriptive, or explanatory paragraph or write a list or do research. The other prompt is for students at lower levels of reading and writing proficiency and asks them to draw a picture and write a caption or short sentences about it. For students who need more space for their responses, a blank page with just the border is provided. A graphic organizer asking students what they already know about Africa and what they want to learn about Africa is also included in this product.

A glossary of key terms is offered so these prompts can also be used with English Language Learners at lower language proficiency levels. Rubrics are provided so you can easily assess your students' writing. For reference, a map of Africa and a map of Sierra Leone are included, along with an image of the Sierra Leonean flag. A list of the ELA Common Core standards addressed in this product and sample WIDA Model Performance Indicators are also provided for teachers working in states that use them.

Please Note: To use this product, you must have a Google account--setting it up is free--and access to Google Drive for you and your students. Upon purchase of this product, you will receive a PDF document that includes instructions on how to use this resource and links to the online Google Slides materials for students.

The 12 artifacts shown in this resource represent many aspects of African culture in general and Sierra Leonean culture in particular. I am very happy to share them with you and your students so they can learn more about Africa!

If you prefer the hardcopy version of this product, you can find it here. To see examples of the writing prompts for Writing Task #2, please take a look at the free sampler here.
