This is a Write On based on a mini lesson on the camel that can be used with a chapter or unit on Asia, Africa or Australia The camel is important in all three areas and has been since its introduction. The mini lesson gives the students some information about the camel physically and historically. It explains the importance of the camel in the Middle Ages and why the camel was physically competent at its job. It ends by explaining the significance of the camel in the world of today in the above regions.
The mini lesson includes a student reading about the camel and a diagram of the camel surrounded by empty information boxes to be filled in by the students.
- Reading - students should read the information before the diagram is given to them. This guarantees they will read the whole selection instead of just searching for the facts they need to fill in the diagram boxes. Encourage the students to underline important facts in the reading as they find them. This trains them to look for facts as they read.
-Camel Diagram - Give the students the diagram only after they have completed the reading. Tell them to use words and phrases to fill in all the boxes on the diagram using facts from the reading.
-Student Writing Activities - A teacher’s guide with rubrics is provided for these activities as well as student handouts for the assignments.
Another handy addition to our new series: Write On! an organizational approach to critical writing preparation. From CK Teaching Aids, of course.
