*Easily adapted to any history couse*
This .pdf includes directions and a rubric for a project requiring students to create a textbook for US History...using only memes. My students take a Georgia Milestones Assessment then have two weeks of school left, and since we have the pressure of a high-stakes assessment weighing us down all year, I spend quite a bit of time remediating during the year. Once the Milestones Assessment is over, however, I like to provide engaging projects that appeal more to the creative students than an interactive notebook might. I typically allow my students to work in partners on this project.
I've used memes in remediation and I have found that they really appeal to those bright but underachieving students who are witty but bored with traditional approaches to history and learning in general.
Be mindful that you will need to address school-appropriate images and languages before students begin this project. Unfortunately, some of the most hilarious and accurate history memes already online are inappropriate or offensive in one way or another.
