This example long term planning meets the requirements for the curriculum in Year 1 (5-6 years).
The full curriculum can be covered in 22 weeks represented by four blocks of six weeks to correspond with typical term/semester periods. This can be adapted to suit your own timetable and term dates.
Includes phonemes learned in the EYFS including long vowels and introduces double-consonants. The early weeks cover two sets of spellings for each of the first four weeks. Letters and sounds are introduced progressively throughout these sets.
Includes the schwa (or lazy vowel) in order to prepare children to learn lengthier words in subsequent weeks. Introduces adding common suffixes to words. Most weeks cover two sets of spellings per week.
Introduces vowel digraphs, trigraphs and split-digraphs. Most weeks cover three sets of spellings per week.
Completes the curriculum requirements for Year 1 including compound words, consonant
spellings ph and wh and the prefix un-.
Exception words and high frequency words can be distributed throughout the weeks or taught explicitly at an appropriate time (sets available for age 4-5 years and 5-6 years).
It is assumed the final weeks of term 2 and early weeks of term 3 will be used for revision.
Five sets of extension activities are available for the later part of the third term. These use curriculum requirements for Year 2.
Spelling activity sets are available for every individual unit. They can also be ordered as bundled sets for each term or as a complete set for the whole year.
