This lesson package sets the stage for the Age of Absolutism in France. Students will get the lay of the land, so to speak, via PowerPoint. In the same PowerPoint, students will meet Catherine de Medici and Henry of Navarre (King Henry IV) - two powerful French rulers who helped steer France toward absolutism. Students will then participate in a partner-jigsaw activity. Partner A will read both a primary and secondary source related to Catherine de Medici and complete a graphic organizer by answering higher-order questions. Partner B will do the same regarding a primary and secondary source related to Henry of Navarre. Then the partners will teach each other about what they've learned and work together to complete their graphic organizers. Students will then answer an Exit Ticket question that asks them to look for the elements of absolutism they see in these historical figures.
