This would go perfectly with your Age of Discovery unit for Social Studies! I created this activity to go along with our USA Studies Weekly week 5 newspaper (Grade 4)!
The materials in this downloadable file can be used on file folders to make lap books, but you could do this on construction paper or on poster too!
Famous European explorers included: Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, Henry Hudson, Juan Ponce de Leon, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, and Hernan Cortes.
Students are to look up each explorer's sponsoring country, goal, route, and result of the expedition.
The timeline is to help students put all information together, and it's a great way to review ordering numbers from least to greatest!
The map helps students recreate the routes explorers took to reach the New World, and it also reinforces map skills!
The 5 Reasons for Exploration can be used however you'd like! Get creative! My students actually glued manipulatives, such as glitter, pipe cleaners, diamonds, cinnamon/pepper/salt, etc. You could also have students illustrate!
If my students had fun doing this, I know yours will!
