Product Description
This is a four-to-five day cooperative learning project designed to teach or reinforce all of the major concepts related to the Age of Exploration. The project is designed to match students of differing achievement levels into groups of 3-4 and work together to complete a large (approximately 3’ x 5’) world map that includes many different aspects of information related to the Age of Exploration. Each day of the project students are required to add different components to their map and use their creativity to keep the map neat and orderly through the use of legends and keys. Students are also required to include written descriptions of things related to the Age of Exploration in addition to visually representing the requirements on their maps. Along with the group work and overall map grade, students complete a self-assessment each day and grade themselves on their effort and contributions to the project as well as provide a narrative of what work they did that day to help their group. Students also have an extended response question to complete independently after the project is finished.

NOTE: the easiest way to complete this project is having access to large roll sheets of paper that can be cut down to the approximate size needed to complete all the required tasks.

Specific tasks required on the map include:
*Drawing the continents
*Identifying the Aztec and Inca Empires
*Shading the empires of Spain, England, Portugal, Netherlands, and France
*Drawing in routes of explorers such as Columbus, Dias, Da Gama, Magellan, Hudson
*Also include their goals, motivations, and image of each one
*Identifying and explaining the Triangle Trade and Middle Passage
*Written descriptions and images required
*Identifying and explaining the Columbian Exchange
*Written descriptions and images are required

A rubric to score the group projects out of 40 points is included and the self-assessment piece is scored out of 25 points. The zip file includes both PDF and Word formats of the directions and self-assessment so that they can be adapted to suit your needs.
