The Age of Exploration or (Discovery), officially began in the early 15th century and lasted until the 17th century. The period is characterized as a time when Europeans began exploring the world by sea in search of trading partners, new goods, and new trade routes.
Renaissance Italy dominated the Mediterranean. Other European powers envied their leadership position in trade with the East. It was a lucrative trade that originated on the far side of Asia and came through Arab traders of the Middle East. Other Europeans wanted to get a piece of this action.
Their imagination was further excited by the travels of an Italian named Marco Polo who had seen the wonders of the East and co-authored a popular book about his experiences.
The information gained during the Age of Exploration significantly helped change the world in Europe. European culture and technology spread throughout the world. Events occurring in Europe could affect events around the world and vice versa.
The Age of Exploration ended in the early 17th century after technological advancements and increased knowledge of the world allowed Europeans to travel easily across the globe by sea. In addition, the creation of settlements along the coasts of the newly found areas created a network of communication and trade, therefore ending the need to search for trade routes.
