The resource centers on an Infographic from the history.com website that details the life of sailors / explorers during the Age of Exploration. Students access the website (or the teacher could print off the infographic) and analyze the infographic using the included questions. The questions require the students to view and pull the required information from the infographic in order to develop an understanding of what life was life for sailors / explorers on their voyages during the Age of Exploration. Your students will be engaged and interested to see what life was like for these sailors! As well, your students will develop their analysis skills by analyzing the infographic. The questions include a detailed teacher key for ease of assessment or for going over with the students afterwards.
Next, the resource includes a journal writing assignment in which students use the information from the infographic in order to develop a series of journal entries from the perspective of a sailor from the time of the Age of Exploration. This is an excellent activity for having students apply the information they learned about the Age of Exploration and how it would have been for sailors during the time period. The resource includes a student handout explaining the expectations of the assignment, a template for students to use to create their journal entries, an example of how the journal entry should be completed, and a marking rubric for ease of assessment.
This is an excellent activity for learning about the Age of Exploration and what it would have been like for the sailors / explorers that made the voyages across the oceans.
