Is President Andrew Jackson the greatest American HERO or the Worst American VILLAIN? The answer to that question is a matter of perspective. This lesson teaches the students to look at both the positive and negative aspects of each event. It helps them understand how some of the events (like the Indian Removal Act) were allowed during Jackson's Presidency. The descriptions set the stage for future discussions about westward expansion, nullification, states' rights, suffrage, and financial crisis.
Learning Objective: The learners will analyze the significant events of President Andrew Jackson by using description cards with political cartoons to describe each event and evaluate the positive and negative aspect of the event in order to understand how perspective plays a role in determining if Andrew Jackson is an American Hero or an American Villain
Description Cards include a one page description of the event and a primary source image (political cartoon). Topics included are:
*Age of the "Common Man" & Expansion of White Male Suffrage
*Veto the National Bank
*Indian Removal Act
This activity allows for cooperative learning groups completing a round robin to discuss and analyze the information. They use the information to determine both the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE of the event. This allows students to see the two sides of President Jackson: the American Hero & the American Villain.
