PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Argumentative and persuasive writing lesson based on the recent current events surrounding the arrest a 14-year old boy named Ahmed Mohamed who brought a homemade clock to school that administrators and law enforcement considered a "hoax bomb."

Students will respond to a "do now" question asking how they would react in a parallel situation. Students will later answer how they would react if one of their classmates brought a similar device to school. Students are also introduced to other recent situations including one where an eight-year old boy was suspended for biting a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun and another where a fifth-grade girl was searched for having a piece of paper torn into the shape of a gun.

The lesson addresses all of the Common Core ELA shifts with emphasis on argumentative writing, non-fiction texts, and vocabulary.

The lesson includes the worksheet, which features a persuasive writing graphic organizer, and the accompanying PowerPoint presentation.
