Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
Word Sort: Print, laminate, and cut out the header cards and the word cards. Students take turns sorting them by the spelling needed to complete the word.
“Ahoy, Matey” – Print, laminate, and cut out the jewel word cards and the spoiler cards (Ahoy, Matey and Shipwreck). Students take turns drawing a card and reading the word. If read correctly, the student keeps the jewel card. If the student gets a Shipwreck card, they lose a jewel). EACH student needs to collect one “Ahoy Matey” card. The student with the most jewels for their treasure chest and one “Ahoy, Matey” card is the winner!
