This lesson teaches students that both heat and acids can denature proteins. It includes a real-world motivation for students, which asks them if they would treat an acid burn in the same way that they would treat a heat burn. Students first need to determine that skin is made of proteins. They then are shown what happens to one type of protein when it is heated up. (Egg white). They then perform the experiment of putting egg white in an acid (vinegar) to see what happens to it. Using their new knowledge, they determine how to treat an acid burn.
The guided notes portion of the lesson goes along with the powerpoint. Sheets provide blank lines for students to fill in missing notes and to answer questions during the lesson. It also includes a worksheet to guide them during the experimental portion of the lesson.
