These lessons (2 days) introduce students to the concept of species biodiversity, discusses why biodiversity matters, and teaches students 3 ways to determine biodiversity. On day 1, students learn how to determine species richness, and how to determine species evenness, including making a frequency histogram. Students practice these skills multiple times. On day 2, students learn how to use the Simpson’s Index to determine biodiversity. The lesson has tons of scaffolding, and all problems include detailed, animated powerpoint slides to go over the answers as a class.
