This lesson teaches students all about Punnett squares and how to use them. There are 4 portions to the lesson, which you could split over 2 class days or assign as homework at your discretion.
Activity 1: Punnett Squares are introduced using a visually appealing, animated powerpoint. I use two examples for the Punnett squares on the ppt, both involving flower color.
Activity 2: "A rainbow of frogs." This activity is really fun and ends up giving you some GREAT things to hang on a bulletin board. Before class, take a class set of markers (minus black and brown) and mix them up in a reuseable grocery bag. Students are told that every color in the rainbow is dominant to the ones below it. (Red is dominant to orange is dominant to yellow is dominant to green is dominant to blue is dominant to purple.) Then, they draw 4 markers from the bag without looking. The first 2 markers they draw are the alleles for the father frog's skin color. The second 2 markers they draw are the alleles for the mother frog's skin color. Once they get their markers, they must correctly color their Frog Punnett square.
One class period is invariably over after activity 1 and 2.
Activity 3- Students complete an animated online activity about Punnett Squares while completing a worksheet. Make sure your school has an updated version of adobe flash player.
Activity 4- Students complete Punnett Squares and answer questions using what they've learned.
Zip file contains: 1.Powerpoint 2.PDF, to guarantee formatting and for easy printing, 3.Word document, to make it easier to edit. I have also included a PDF and word file of the "rainbow of frogs" genetics activity as a separate document, because microsoft word sometimes gives me trouble with large, copied pictures and I want to make sure you have a file that works.
Document is a conglomeration of my original material and material from other sources. I have made a good-faith effort to include everything non-original in the free preview download. Price reflects this.
