Many people don't understand evolution very well. A very common misunderstanding of evolution is that traits appear in the environment because they are needed. (For example, birds needed to be able to fly, and so they mutated to develop wings.) However, this is NOT TRUE. Actually, mutations occur randomly. Evolution does not tell us that a good mutation will appear- it only tells us that, if a good mutation happens to appear randomly, its frequency will increase in a population. This lesson teaches students that mutations all occur randomly. It begins with a short powerpoint and then continues with a class activity in which students are given "mutations" and have to compete with each other to keep their "babies" from starving. Lastly, students have to complete questions about the activity and a worksheet about mutations in fictional worms.
File includes: 1. A powerpoint presentation (8 slides) 2. A word document for easy editing and 3. A PDF file for easy printing.
Document is 100% my original document except for the final worksheet on fictional worms. I have included this non-original material in my free preview download.
