This lesson teaches students the six skills that people need to be good scientists: observation, inference, prediction, classification, making models, and communication. Lesson has two parts, to be divided over two or three days. First, students copy notes from a short powerpoint to learn the six skills, and watch a short video to test their powers of observation. (Video is the famous "invisible gorilla" experiment.) Then students practice their ability to differentiate observations, inferences, and predictions using a picture and a Garfield comic.
On day 2 (and possibly day 3) students practice using the 6 scientific skills at 6 skills stations. At station 1, students must make observations and classify objects using only their sense of smell. At station 2, students must practice their observation, inference, and prediction skills by combining liquids and guessing what will happen. At station 3, students must test their powers of observation against some optical illusions (included with your purchase.) At station 4, students must classify substances as solid or liquid- including the debatable substance "oobleck." At station 5, students must examine models, and then make a model of their own. At station 6, students practice their communication skills by answering assessment questions.
A teacher key and directions for making all stations are included.
