This is an interactive STEM lesson with an emphasis on project-based learning. Using just one roll of aluminum foil, students must create the tallest freestanding structure they can.
This lesson includes a whole class discussion, hands on creation of a designed product using the engineering process, and completion of 3 worksheets covering the design, testing and evaluation phases. At the end of the lesson is a great time to give students some experience with sharing their ideas by having each group present to the class.
By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
→ Represent & communicate design ideas through drawing
→ Evaluate the effectiveness of an engineered product
→ Explore properties and construction relationships of an engineered product
→ Negotiate criteria for success
→ Demonstrate safe, cooperative & responsible work practices
In this resource:
→ 4 page lesson plan with Australian curriculum alignment
→ 3 Engineering process worksheets
→ Powerpoint with challenge slide & questions from engineering process worksheets
→ Set of 8 student role description cards
