Product Description

In brief, this lab requires students to calculate the number of airborne bacteria in the classroom. They are given a conversion factor (50,000 bacterial cells per cubic meter), and must brainstorm what they need to know and the materials they will need. They then design a protocol to calculate the number (by accurately measuring the dimensions of the room, and applying a volume formula, LxWxH). To conclude, they average class data, and answer analysis questions. There is a link to an article, which can serve as an introductory resource, or an extension activity.

Prior Knowledge: No specific prior knowledge is required for this activity. It serves as a supplemental problem-solving activity that incorporates basic math and spatial skills.

Implementing the Lesson:

Materials and Setup: There is very little setup for this activity. You will need meter sticks for students, and the lab printout. There is a link to an article that you may print out, which can be found in the answer section.

One of the benefits of this activity is that it is useful for many different grades. It is general enough to be used for science class (I use it in my science classes), or a math class.
