Product Description
This interactive book project is designed to be used on a computer or tablet—perfect for iPads or Chromebooks—while reading the novel Al Capone Does My Shirts. Along with questions that explore different perspectives and spark critical thinking, links are included to help students understand the historical context, life in the time period, changes over time, and historical characters. In an effort to integrate multiple subjects and engage students of varying levels, videos, images, and articles are linked and thought was taken to balance reading with video and fiction with non-fiction. Students use a notebook to answer questions and complete activities, so they aren’t entirely on “screens,” but using them as a tool.

With advanced readers in mind, image links and links to “extras” are included on each page for early finishers to explore. This project can be used with a whole class, small group, or individually. You can assign all or part of it. That’s why homeschoolers love my book projects! As this is self-contained and highly engaging, it is ideal for students who read at different rates or assigned to advanced students for individual work knowing those students won’t miss the context or historical significance.

Integration is key to our busy school days so I included as many subjects as possible within the context of the story and aligned all of it with common core focusing on analysis from multiple sources of media.

Language arts:
Character analysis, figurative language, vocabulary development, writing, pronouns, using ellipses, creating a table of contents and glossary

Math:
How big is an acre, multiplication, inflation, creating a graph, comparing 1930’s dollars to today, how to use an abacus

Social Studies:
The Great Depression, American history, autism, the 1930s, California history, San Francisco history, moral dilemmas and ambiguities

Science:
How vocal cords work, bridge construction, technological changes over time

This project includes over 46 links to additional material! Also included is a page of extension projects for advanced students/early finishers.
