For this adventure, students will join Claire and Grandma Allen on a trip to Anchorage, Alaska. Hosted by Grandma's pen pal since 1959, they will experience Alaskan hospitality complete with humor and compassion.
Students will become engaged as they figure out two budgets related to the Alaska journey and watch a salmon run on You Tube. As one of the Internet research projects, students will also create a class cookbook of Moose Recipes.
The enriching hands-on activities engage students as they explore Alaska bush pilot history, Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Races, Denali National Park, and Native American culture. They can also learn Iditarod songs. You may be surprised at some of the Inuit inventions! Tape the kids in their culminating activity - A television news broadcast!
Printables, answer keys, rubric, common core elements, and teacher resources are also included in this integrated packet. The story, "Alaska Invitation," ends with a surprise twist. Will your students see this coming?
