This handout details a writing project that I used towards the end of teaching The Stranger. In this project, the students first review examples of Newspaper Articles from The Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and New York Times. Then, the students "gather the facts" from the book, both from Mersault's shooting of the Arab at the end of Part I, and from the trial itself (including witness quotes). Finally, the students use these facts to write a 350-750 word article about Mersault's trial, attempting to mimic the journalistic style of the example articles.
The students are required to fill out information on this handout, and then turn in the handout along with their typed newspaper article.
