The songs used in this activity reflect my musical interests, but I was really impressed with how engaged my students were. The main objectives focus on critical thinking with the novel as the centerpiece. Students listen to the songs while following the lyrics. I encourage active listening, which involves annotating, highlighting and making connections, and then writing precise, well-supported responses. The Metallica song was consistently well-received and helped to engage many of my more hesitant learners. The Pearl Jam song really stimulated the best conversation, particularly among my seniors. I never used it, but there is some footage on the Pearl Jam 20 documentary of Eddie Vedder's reaction to the Roskilde tragedy and also some writing on Rolling Stone's website about the song, both of which would complement the discussion well. The Blind Melon song is fairly simple and my seniors liked the message about always dreaming ahead. The kids, by and large, did not like the Van Morrison song; this crushed my soul somewhat, but I guess we have to forgive them their youth. Have fun!
