You plan to or are in the middle of offering Brave New World to a new audience of students!
And now you may be looking for a way to extend beyond the final page in a way that deepens the impact of Huxley’s ideas and helps students broaden and define their own perspectives. Each question derives its focus from the novel and asks students to think thematically and expansively about the warnings Huxley offers with a multidisciplinary approach to the discussion. How does the novel make you think differently about science? Current political issues? Philosophical concerns such as what it means to be an individuality, the value of loneliness, and what is true happiness?
In a small class, you may choose to have a whole-class discussion, or, if numbers permit, you may wish to have students form smaller discussion groups to explore these questions. Each assumes the conversations will take place after reading/studying the entire novel. The document includes sixteen thoughtfully designed and novel-based questions to consider and discuss.
Questions may be starting off points for projects or analytical essays dealing with the subjects here; or they may provide a satisfying and engaging final discussion in themselves!
