Product Description
Alexander Calder was an American artist who created a new style of moving sculpture called mobiles. Although he is most known for his sculpture, his paintings are a great way to introduce this artist to kids. Easy to prep and using readily available materials, this abstract art project teaches children about line, organic shapes, color and composition.

This dynamic art project can be done with children as young as seven (grade two) and as old as nine (grade four). Use the black and white line drawing to emphasize line and shape as a practice before the lesson or as a guide during the lesson.

This lesson is great for: Children in second, third and fourth grade (7-9 years old)

One of my most favorite artists, Calder is most known for his primary colored paintings, moving sculptures and stabiles. His love for bright colors, moving parts and sense of whimsy inspired him to create the "Calder Circus" an installation of over 50 moving parts.

If you want to teach your students about Calder but don't have the prep time for a form-based project, this easy abstract painting project offers a great introduction to one of America's leading artists.

This 15-page Calder-Inspired Abstract Art lesson plan features the following:
- Introduction to Calder and how to best teach the lesson
- Art supply list and lesson overview
- "I Can" objectives for the student
- Timeline to help break down the steps
- About the Artist bio
- Two book suggestions to accompany the lesson
- Step-by-step photo-tutorial art instruction
- Black & White Calder Drawing to emphasize line, shape and space
- Second grade student gallery
- Web resources that will enhance your lesson
- Artist statement for students
