This activity has been designed to enhance student understanding for sequencing historical events as per the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It can be used as both a direct instruction activity or as skill practice at a literacy station or reading center.
I have found this to be successful when used as follow-up at a listening station or at a station with various sources available for a specific historical event. Pages 2 and 3 of the document contain cards for all 8 events significant to said historical event. These can be cut and used by each student or printed on cardstock, laminated, and used cooperatively by a small group prior to the student completing page 1 independently.
To add rigor, I have coupled this activity with another similar timeline activity and had students look for common themes, corresponding events, relationships, or other connections between multiple events.
