This is a US history lesson regarding the debate over the national bank between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. I used this opportunity to also introduce the concepts of loose and strict constructionist (constitutionalist) incorporating the arguments from both sides. The lesson includes four primary sources, an excerpt from both men, Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution and the quote of the elastic clause. The lesson was a great success in my Title 1, NYC DOE school. It is Common Core aligned and the students found it very lucid regarding the loose vs. strict argues, something that not only is difficult for the students to understand but also sets the stage for the rest of the Unit leading up to the Civil War.
I also play Lin-Manuel Miranda's rap "Cabinet Battle #1" for the class. Lyrics are attached.
