This is a one-page brainstorming handout to help students plan a narrative based off from the text Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. I read the book aloud to the students, and then we discuss the skill of cause and effect and how it is incorporated throughout the entire text.
To apply this skill in their own writing, I have them create their own "Bad Day" narrative. I share with them the sample narrative I created, and then they use the brainstorming page to help them get their thoughts down on paper. I require them to create their own bad day phrase, and then they need to use a certain number of cause/effect signal words/phrases within their narrative.
