Students will begin this assignment by watching the Crash Course video: Alexander the Great and the Situation ... the Great? The video will present several reasons behind why we idolize someone like Alexander the Great. His accomplishments and great victories are analyzed and used as talking points to develop reasons why leaders throughout history (Caesar, Napoleon) have wanted to emulate Alexander. His conquest of the Persian Empire, the founding of Alexandria, his march into India, and the controversy that exists over his death are all discussed. Following the Crash Course video, students will go to the Biography.com website and watch a second video and read an accompanying article. The article covers Alexander's childhood (tutored by Aristotle), his first military missions, his bloody claim to the throne of Macedonia, the military campaigns against Persia, the spreading of Greek culture, and his death.
