Alexis de Tocqueville wrote one of the most insightful books on American society after his travels through the USA in 1831. Amazingly his observations are hauntingly descriptive of today's America in many situations. This 300 word passage identifies American beliefs about the country and compares them with Europeans. It can be used to study the idea of American Exceptionalism although the does not use the term in his writing.
