Product Description
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote one of the most insightful books on American society after his travels through the USA in 1831. Amazingly his observations are hauntingly descriptive of today's America in many situations. This 300 word passage identifies American beliefs about the country and compares them with Europeans. It can be used to study the idea of American Exceptionalism although the does not use the term in his writing.
I included steps to lead your students through a guided highlighting activity to help them enter the document if the original vocabulary needs to altered to fit the readiness level of your students.
I included 5 discussion or short answer questions. One of the questions asks, Are the differences De Tocqueville mentions between Americans and Europeans still valid? Why or why not?
The passage sets up well for analysis through graphic organizers such as Thinking Maps.
