I teach my students to simplify radicals prior to teaching them to solve quadratic equations. Since the STAR test does not allow them to use a calculator, I want them to be capable of simplifying radicals with all the methods used to solve quadratics. Therefore, I teach this lesson first, then have my students simplify all answers while solving quadratics -- never using a calculator. I have also found that doing it this way helps them retain the information when they are Algebra 2 students.

Strictly following the textbook, this would be a lesson for Section 10.1 of the Prentice Hall CA Algebra 1 textbook.

Since it just need it to have students solve quadratic equations, it does not go into rationalizing the denominator or using conjagates. Those concepts are introduced in my unit on Radicals.
