Product Description

This is the PowerPoint lesson I used for my Algebra 2 class to teach absolute value equations and inequalities. It corresponds to Section 1.4 of the Prentice Hall textbook California Algebra 2. The lesson contains a video that explains solving absolute value inequalities.

Bonus: I've also included a worksheet (a copy in Word and a pdf copy) that goes with this section. We begin teaching before all the students have their textbooks, so I use this worksheet.

Standards:

COMMON CORE STANDARDS for Algebra A-REI 1.0

Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning.

1.Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.

COMMON CORE STANDARDS for Algebra A-REI 2.0

Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning.

2.Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise.

COMMON CORE STANDARDS for Algebra A-REI 3.0

Solve equations and inequalities in one variable. [Linear inequalities; literal equations that are linear in the variables being solved for; quadratics with real solutions.]

3.Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.
