Once my students begin to get familiar with graphing linear equations, I like to give them a practical, real-world situation to model: a coffee gift card, on which the balance declines daily.
Students graph the remaining balance on a graph, and then answer some practical questions about the graph.
I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.
