This worksheet is designed to help students understand how to rewrite an augmented matrix in reduced row echelon form. The intent is for them to be able to apply elementary row operations, by hand, so they can easily read off the values of the variables once the augmented matrix is written in reduced row echelon form. The worksheets also shows them how to use the "rref(" functionality of their TI calculators.
Note: Because some of the systems of equations are so big, I have posted the solutions to two problems in the comments column of Word. To turn off the comments, select the "Review" tab, and then in the "Tracking" section, change "All Markup" to "No Markup".
I start out class with a 15-minute "mini-lesson," giving my students some basic examples of what today's lesson will be about. Once the mini-lesson is over, I have them get to work within their groups on this worksheet, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.
