Engage your students in the problem solving process with this guided inquiry activity.
Individually or in small groups of 2 - 4, students will watch a brief video of New York City Marathon finishers and will be prompted with a word problem to determine how many elite runners are still racing after a specific time.
In this activity, your students will:
~Learn to read through word problems for understanding and to identify the main question, key information given, and intermediate steps needed to find the solution.
~Work through a 4 step guided activity sheet to come up with a solution to the problem.
~Perform multiplication and subtraction of whole numbers and fractions.
~Interact with classmates and you, the instructor, to discuss the topics, solutions, and procedures.
~Extend their learning experience by applying a step-based approached to solving an additional word problem.
You are downloading a zip file which contains the following:
1. A PowerPoint (2010) file with an imbedded video and the word problem prompt.
2. The student activity sheet which contains the word problem prompt, instructions, and a series of 4 questions (steps) that guide your students towards the solution.
3. The student activity sheet answer key with worked solutions.
4. An instructor procedure and suggestion guide which contains a possible follow-up question to challenge your students to extend their learning to another problem.
