This is a double set of task cards designed to support the Common Core standard 6.EE.A.3 and 6.EE.A.4, which focus on having students generate equivalent expressions (both by evaluating coefficients, and by factoring them out).
The first set is slightly easier than the second, with smaller numbers used for factoring. Many of the distractor answer choices are intended to catch the problem of multiplying the coefficient by only the first term and not the second (a common problem my students have!).
The second set uses larger numbers and contains more questions with multiple answers. None of these cards require solving to find the value of a variable. They all involve equivalent expressions (3y is the same as y+y+y, etc).
This is a 12-page PDF. Each card set contains 32 cards (8 per page for 4 pages), a 1-page recording sheet, and a 1-page answer key.
I have frequently used task cards with my class, and I like to pair the kids up and have them work with a partner as they solve. I feel that is increased kids' ability (and willingness) to speak about math and to practice using the vocabulary that I want them to have. It also allows me to walk around and talk to the kids to see what problems they might be having. These would also work well as a math center.
